Overview:
Silverlake Industries of Solaris VII is best known for producing one-off specialty 'Mechs in the lightweight division. Constantly searching for BattleMechs to modify, Silverlake came to realize there was a niche for an economical and robust ‘Mech aimed at the urban market, Knowing they would lack the resources for extensive support and repair initially, they knew their first mass-produced BattleMech would have to be easy to maintain and/or modify as needed in the field. Silverlake R&D engineers turned immediately to an ancient Terran design known for its dependability, economy, adaptability and longevity.
However, despite its well deserved reputation for reliability, the design had some serious drawbacks. It lacked the heft of a serious street fighter. And it’s cruising speed of 32 kilometers per hour – maximum speed of 54 kph – combined with a jump range of only sixty meters meant it was generally outclassed when it came to the intersection-to-intersection drag races that are the hallmark of urban combat.
To remedy this, Silverlake design engineers armed the DRB-1K with no less than ten Corean Enterprises MacAdams-Suharno extended range small lasers. (The prototype featured Clan ER small lasers, but Silverlake Industries' supply of these was evidently not up to the demands of supplying military markets. It is rumored the Clan lasers are available at a significant premium.) They apparently have no such shortage of Clan heat sinks, however: the DireBug carries ten Clan double heat sinks, enough to sustain almost continuous fire. For adversaries who attempt to strike from a distance, the DRB-1 mounts an LRM-15 fully capable of making their lives short and uncomfortable.
Of special note is the ASF Interlock, named in memory of Silverlake test pilot Ashe “Smokey” Flambeaux. It ensures that the convertible top is closed and the driver’s window fully up before the LRM-15 can fire. While this prevents pilot immolation, it can add costly seconds to launching the first salvo. Prudent DireBug pilots “button up” before combat is joined.
While the choice of small lasers limits the BattleMech’s range, the sheer mass of focused fire means no light ‘Mech wants to find itself nose-to-nose with this urban scrapper. Though stories of massed DireBug laser barrages literally chopping assault ‘Mechs off at the knees are no doubt apocryphal, many a medium ‘Mech pilot has found prudent retreat the best tactic when meeting a DireBug in a back alley.
While hugely popular, the DireBug’s convertible design means the cockpit offers only limited protection. Also, with a near-complete lack of rear armor, the canny pilot never turns his back on an enemy.
However, DireBug pilots frequently boast there’s nobody they have to run from. While this is clearly bravado, it is not without basis. With nine and a half of its twenty tons devoted to offensive weapons, kilo for kilo the DireBug is one of the most heavily armed ‘Mechs ever developed.
