...It still is not aimed at bringing us to the Third League setting...

Most images start out with a quick rough sketch just to help establish the composition of elements within the scene and to nail down things like horizon, vanishing points, camera placement, lighting direction, etc. Even at this very rough stage it can be very helpful for making design decisions. From here we can get feedback from Layout to know where our ‘dead spaces’ will be for things like title, tags, logos, and other graphic elements that will go over the image.
In the case of this first thumbnail, the specs called for Alex to shoehorn all the ‘Mechs from two upcoming Lance Packs (oriented towards Davion & Kurita) onto one battle-scene with a Quickdraw and Victor battling it out point blank in the foreground.

This second thumbnail was a quick study to drop in the general color ranges of the units involved and the various hazy color changes in the battlefield setting. You can see subtle differences in the posing and locations of the units as Alex tries different options to decide which delivers the best image.

Though this third Work-In-Progress is still clearly unfinished you can see a lot more clarity in the scene, along with some rather significant decisions that have been made. Alex flipped the two foreground ‘Mechs to get the Victor's autocanon in front while also getting the more dynamic SRM torso of the Quickdraw toward the viewer. I allow my corps artists a lot of freedom to try different options and decide which make for the best image, and Alex has taken that freedom to turn the image around (literally.) It bears noting that Alex likes to focus his details on the most important elements first which helps him determine how detailed to make the elements placed deeper into the scene. You can see that those background ‘Mechs are little more than space-holder blobs, but it’s also clear how the scene is coming together. This is where the scene really become fun to work on because it’s really coming together.

This is the 4th ‘Work-In-Progress’ step we received for this cover, and it’s at this stage where we really start seeing the magic happening. You can see the background ‘Mechs just roughly blocked in, and an oddly gangly Panther in the middle ground (which will need some edits as we move forward) but you definitely get the gist of what this cover will look like. Alex is a master at bringing that key battlefield moment to life and here with the chassis-to-chassis brawl going on between the Victor and the Quickdraw, you can just tell this battle is visceral. From the glowing edges to the autocanon damage to the fiery sparks from that left torso punch, the viewer’s eye flows around through the storytelling to weave the mind into the scene of destruction before you. You can almost feel the critical hit rolls in the damage they are dealing each other. This is the very definition of what it means to bring the scene, and the game, to life.

Here’s the final—where all the little details come together. This is my favorite step of the process because my job is to stare at it for several minutes to really take it all (and see if there is anything further that needs tweaking.) From the gleam on the spent shell casings to the decals and unit logos, it is a scene where every part of it reads BATTLETECH. From here the image goes to Layout where they drop in the book title, logos, and get it ready for print.
All told this is another great image by a great artist for the absolute greatest fans in the world. Enjoy, fellow MechWarriors.
