Calderon Protectorate Decries “Marriage to the Devil”

GALACTIC INSINUATOR – In a surprise development - with potentially explosive implications far beyond the affairs of its participants - Galactic Insinuator has learned that Protector Grover Shraplen of the Taurian Concordat and Kali Liao, Thuggee Cult leader and exiled sister of Capellan Confederation Chancellor Sun-Tzu Liao, were married just last week in a secret ceremony on the Capellan world of Highspire. If true, the wedding would represent a further unity in the Capellans’ so-called Trinity Alliance with two of the Periphery’s most powerful nations. The union would merge the ruling lines of the Capellan and Taurian states in much the same way it is rumored that Sun-Tzu’s own relationship with the Canopian heiress Naomi Centrella may.

But while the alleged consummation of a Capellan-Canopian alliance through a royal engagement—even so soon after the break up of Sun-Tzu’s engagement to one-time Free Worlds heiress Isis Marik—has proven a surprisingly acceptable topic of conversation in the Canopian realm, the rumored marriage of the Concordat Protector to a woman vilified in the media for the “Black May” attacks of 3062 has provoked harsh responses from certain sectors of the fractured Taurian state. In particular, Marshal Baron Cham Kithrong, leader of the breakaway Calderon Protectorate, is said to have issued a harsh condemnation of the Shraplen-Liao marriage.
“Not only would such a union further corrupt the already diseased leadership which keeps our motherland under a dark cloud of oppression and paranoia,” said Protectorate spokesperson Neil Braun, “in wedding a murderess who worships death and personally commanded the slaughter of thousands of her own people with nerve gas, our would-be Protector has bonded himself to a monster. It is a marriage to the Devil Incarnate that will only lead to an orgy of blood and pain, drowning our beloved homelands.”
Officials at the Taurian capital have refused to comment on the reported marriage. One unnamed source went as far as to proclaim that the Protector never left Taurus, much less journeyed to Highspire for a secret wedding. Calls to the Capellan embassy on Taurus were also not returned.
“A marriage between the Taurian Protector and a scion of House Liao—even one as discredited as Kali—would create astounding repercussions for the future,” says political commentator Justine Blake. “through this union, Sun-Tzu, as the effective guardian of his sister and patriarch of the Liao line, becomes Shraplen’s unquestioned superior. Not that he wasn’t all along, in the political sense.
“Worse still,” Blake adds, “any heirs the two may have would hold the dual claims to the Taurian and Capellan thrones, placing one of the Periphery’s industrial—if not economic—giants under undisputed Capellan rule. If the rumors of a similar union between Sun-Tzu [Liao] and Naomi [Centrella] are true, in just one generation or so, we may see one state where three used to be. This would create a Capellan Confederation more powerful than it has been since the dawn of the Succession Wars, and will forever change the way we look at the power of Peripheral alliances.”
