Even during the Civil War, mascots were common. Shown here is the ship's company of the gunboat USS Hunchback. If you look on the left side, you will see a white furball among the crew. Officers during the War would also frequently bring their gun dogs with them and go duck hunting while their ship was on blockade duty.
